Arriving in the newly founded Cape Colony aboard the Donkervliet on the 20th of July 1699, Jacques Mouton was one of the pioneering French Huguenots who helped create the country that would become South Africa. Jacques’s home and livelihood was the farm “Steenwerk” (named after his hometown of Steenwerck in France) located near Porterville, at the foot of the Olifants River Mountains. After a productive life and having fathered 3 sons and 7 daughters, he passed away in 1731. Being a French Huguenot, he was buried at La Terra de Luc in Franschhoek where many Huguenots were based.
With this wine, we honor the Huguenots who greatly influenced the future of winemaking in South Africa.
Jacques Mouton has partnered with La Couronne wines as the producer and home of the brand, which is one of the original farms given to the Huguenots by the first Governor of the Cape Colony – Simon van der Stel.
