The Villiera vineyards have been run by Simon Grier since 1983 (ably assisted by vineyard managers Christie Franse and John Williams) and are approximately 170 hectares in extent. Yields are a conservative 8 tons per hectare to ensure fruit quality.
The varieties planted in the vineyards are 50% red and 50% white. The wines produced are 40% Cap Classique, 30% red, and 30% white.
At Villiera, productivity is of utmost importance. Their new pruning techniques taught to the pruning team by Italian company Simonit and Sirch have greatly improved the productivity of the vineyard team and the uniformity, longevity, and quality of the vines. Their ongoing emphasis is on green energy, rainwater harvesting, water efficiency, and other sustainable projects. Villiera is a certified member of the Old Vine Project and the vineyards are IPW certified.
Villiera is also committed to fair-labor practices. Social sustainability is another core philosophy in their business and can be witnessed through their support for the Pebbles Project, the Owethu Clinic and Early Childhood Development Centre, and After-School Club.
These together with other programs have earned their WIETA Accreditation and BBBEE (Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment) certification.
The Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association, established in November 2002 was instrumental in bringing together stakeholders in the Western Cape wine and broader agricultural industries to promote ethical trade in the agricultural sector. The WIETA Code of Conduct prohibits the use of child labor, excessive working hours, and unfair discrimination while ensuring a healthy and safe working environment and the right to a living wage.
The wines are also vegan and organically and sustainably produced.
